Learning about Line

The new year is in full swing here at Byam Elementary! We spent the first few weeks getting used to new routines and expectations in the art room, as well as talking about how artists come up with their own creative ideas for their artwork. As part of our choice-based curriculum, students will be responsible for coming up their own ideas for their artwork, and their instruction will focus guiding them to express those ideas effectively. I have been blown away by the amazing concepts that students have been coming up with and incorporating into their works of art, from "lava temples" to book cover designs for their own works of creative writing. So far, students have been working in the Drawing Center, and just last week the Inspiration Station, the center with all of our art books, opened as well. The New School Year Begins

The 2017-2018 school year has officially begun, and I thought I would share some photos of the Byam Art classroom. Following a TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) or choice-based model, the classroom is made up of different art-making centers. As we begin the year and get used to new routines, the Drawing Center is the center that is open first. Students will earn additional centers as they show their good studio behaviors of working like artists and taking care of their materials! The plan is to open the Inspiration Station next week.
