Learning about Line

The new year is in full swing here at Byam Elementary! We spent the first few weeks getting used to new routines and expectations in the art room, as well as talking about how artists come up with their own creative ideas for their artwork. As part of our choice-based curriculum, students will be responsible for coming up their own ideas for their artwork, and their instruction will focus guiding them to express those ideas effectively. I have been blown away by the amazing concepts that students have been coming up with and incorporating into their works of art, from "lava temples" to book cover designs for their own works of creative writing.

So far, students have been working in the Drawing Center, and just last week the Inspiration Station, the center with all of our art books, opened as well. We will soon be opening the Building Center, followed by the Collage Center.

This week students in all grades are discussing the element of art: Line! Kindergarten students have been having fun acting out lines with their bodies, and all students are working on incorporating different types of lines into their drawings! Some fourth grade students have been excited to "invent" their own types of lines, and have begun working together on a new "Lines" poster for the wall.

I would like to thank all of the Byam families that have been sending in smocks, recyclables, and other supplies! They will all go to excellent use, and are MUCH appreciated!
