How do students work in a choice-based classroom?

This short video of students working in their centers will give you a sneak peek into how students work in a choice-based art class. In the clip, you will see students working in different centers, with materials ranging from building sets to oil pastel! I love how engaged students are in the choice-based environment, since they are able to choose their activities!

    Thank you for this insight, Mrs. Grover. I love how every child in that video was not just "doing art," but how they were engaged in what they were doing. Being able to make choices encourages intrinsic motivation and inspires them to learn new techniques to be able to express themselves. I love this!

Students in all grades have been learning about the color wheel! Primary colors, secondary colors, warm and cool... we have been learning about how colors work together and how we can use them in our artwork. Our first graders, who have been learning about primary colors, have been participating in the primary color challenge as part of our standards-based report card assessment for this term. They have been challenged to create a work of art in one of our centers using only the primary colors: red, yellow and blue! It's great to see how different all of the artwork is, and how the students are able to show they know the primary colors through drawing, painting, and collage!

Autonomy and Collaboration in Byam Art

In Byam Art we learn to draw, to paint, to sculpt, to construct... but perhaps the most important skills of all that we practice are those of autonomy and collaboration! In Byam Art, students learn to be independent and take responsibility for their learning, as well as how to work with others toward a common goal. In a choice-based studio environment, students are expected to take initiative and to make decisions about their art. They decide what to create, they gather their materials, go through the process of planning, making, and reflecting on their art, and take responsibility for maintaining our studio. Because not everyone is doing the same thing on a given day, students have to be somewhat self-sufficient, accessing our classroom materials and resources (including classmates!) to help them to reach their artistic goals. Construction Center and Gingerbread House Contest

The students have been thrilled about the opening of our new center, Construction Center! In this center, students use (mostly) recycled materials to create sculptural 3D works of art. Students in grades 3 and 4 this year have been invited to participate in a contest utilizing supplies in our art room to construct a gingerbread house. Students who choose to be a part of it are working during art class individually or as a team to build a gingerbread with a concept or theme behind it, and using the building techniques we are learning in class.
