Two New Centers: Inspiration Station and Building Center!



The students have been excited about our two new centers which have opened in the past couple of weeks: the Inspiration Station and the Building Center.

The Inspiration Station is our center which includes all of our art books. Students have the choice to cozy up with an art book on the rug for the day, or after they have finished with their artwork at another center.

The Building Center has been a huge hit across all of the grades this past week. It includes several different sets of building materials that students can use to experiment with creating temporary sculptures. The students have really enjoyed being able to work together! They have been especially fond of the Joinks building set.




The collage center will be next to open, and the students are looking forward to it!
This week, students in grades 2-4 will be getting a refresher on using chalk pastels in their artwork, and students in K-1 will be taking about how they can use their whole paper. As usual, the students are creating artwork in their center based on their own unique ideas.

Primary Color Challenge

Students in all grades have been learning about the color wheel! Primary colors, secondary colors, warm and cool... we have been learning about how colors work together and how we can use them in our artwork. Our first graders, who have been learning about primary colors, have been participating in the primary color challenge as part of our standards-based report card assessment for this term. They have been challenged to create a work of art in one of our centers using only the primary colors: red, yellow and blue! It's great to see how different all of the artwork is, and how the students are able to show they know the primary colors through drawing, painting, and collage!

Autonomy and Collaboration in Byam Art

In Byam Art we learn to draw, to paint, to sculpt, to construct... but perhaps the most important skills of all that we practice are those of autonomy and collaboration! In Byam Art, students learn to be independent and take responsibility for their learning, as well as how to work with others toward a common goal. In a choice-based studio environment, students are expected to take initiative and to make decisions about their art. They decide what to create, they gather their materials, go through the process of planning, making, and reflecting on their art, and take responsibility for maintaining our studio. Because not everyone is doing the same thing on a given day, students have to be somewhat self-sufficient, accessing our classroom materials and resources (including classmates!) to help them to reach their artistic goals. Construction Center and Gingerbread House Contest

The students have been thrilled about the opening of our new center, Construction Center! In this center, students use (mostly) recycled materials to create sculptural 3D works of art. Cardboard Attachments Video by Mrs. Gover We are also trying something new this year to channel all of the students' festive energy and excitement for the holidays coming up... a Gingerbread House Contest! Students in grades 3 and 4 this year have been invited to participate in a contest utilizing supplies in our art room to construct a gingerbread house. Students who choose to be a part of it are working during art class individually or as a team to build a gingerbread with a concept or theme behind it, and using the building techniques we are learning in class.
