Collage Center and Art All-Stars

This week, we are thrilled to announce the Collage Center is opening for students in all grades! (Our littlest ones, our K students, are working with a tabletop Collage Center with a bit more limited selection of tools and materials.) Students are discussing how collages are made and how to work with the Collage Center supplies. Next week we will be looking at a couple of amazing collage artists, including Eric Carle and Henri Matisse. The students and I are really excited to have this new center open and to be able to use some fun new materials like buttons, foam shapes, and pom pons! The collages are already coming out so beautifully, so I just hung the new Byam Art Gallery display of Kindergarten Collages!





Each month in the Byam Art room, students compete for the coveted title of Art All-Stars for their grade. Every week, they can earn up to five points for showing expected behaviors such as coming into class with voices off and sitting on the rug, giving quiet listening attention, and cleaning up completely. It is a great way for students to show those three R's that we think are so important here at Byam... being Respectful, Responsible, and Ready. The winners for the month get a star stamp and their class up on the Art All-Stars poster in the classroom. They are also announced during morning announcements so that the whole school knows which classes are working the hardest to show those expected behaviors!

Primary Color Challenge

Students in all grades have been learning about the color wheel! Primary colors, secondary colors, warm and cool... we have been learning about how colors work together and how we can use them in our artwork. Our first graders, who have been learning about primary colors, have been participating in the primary color challenge as part of our standards-based report card assessment for this term. They have been challenged to create a work of art in one of our centers using only the primary colors: red, yellow and blue! It's great to see how different all of the artwork is, and how the students are able to show they know the primary colors through drawing, painting, and collage!

Autonomy and Collaboration in Byam Art

In Byam Art we learn to draw, to paint, to sculpt, to construct... but perhaps the most important skills of all that we practice are those of autonomy and collaboration! In Byam Art, students learn to be independent and take responsibility for their learning, as well as how to work with others toward a common goal. In a choice-based studio environment, students are expected to take initiative and to make decisions about their art. They decide what to create, they gather their materials, go through the process of planning, making, and reflecting on their art, and take responsibility for maintaining our studio. Because not everyone is doing the same thing on a given day, students have to be somewhat self-sufficient, accessing our classroom materials and resources (including classmates!) to help them to reach their artistic goals. Construction Center and Gingerbread House Contest

The students have been thrilled about the opening of our new center, Construction Center! In this center, students use (mostly) recycled materials to create sculptural 3D works of art. Cardboard Attachments Video by Mrs. Gover We are also trying something new this year to channel all of the students' festive energy and excitement for the holidays coming up... a Gingerbread House Contest! Students in grades 3 and 4 this year have been invited to participate in a contest utilizing supplies in our art room to construct a gingerbread house. Students who choose to be a part of it are working during art class individually or as a team to build a gingerbread with a concept or theme behind it, and using the building techniques we are learning in class.
